Colour Wash Block (Quilting without pins)
On my recent trip to South Africa I
participated in a four day course run by Doortjie Gersbach at her wonderful
home in Montagu . Seven quilters had
travelled from Still Baii to Montagu (180 kms) and were staying in Doortjie's
Guest Cottage. Five participated on the
Colourwash Course and two were doing crochet.
Before arriving at the course we had to prepare 81 different materials
(2 x 2" strips by wof) ranging from dark to light and these had to be
pinned out on a sheet and we also had to
prepare a paper grid consisting of 81 squares.
During the rest of the course we
stitched and cut and stitched again and NO pins were allowed. The first day we started at 0930 and finished
at 1600 hours but the days got longer as the course progressed with some of
quilters starting at 0700 hours and finishing at 1800. I started at 0800 and finished at 1700. By
the end of the four days all of us had made 18 blocks and some were well into
their second set of 18. We were given a
pattern sheet to take with us so that we could lay out our blocks in the order
of our choice.
The two images show the strips we pinned
onto the sheet and the block we created (x 36). I have finished my 36 blocks and am now
working on which design to use. At first
on this course I felt a little out of my comfort zone as I am not a traditional
quilter (preferring instead to create contemporary/art textiles) but I enjoyed
getting back to basics and learning how to
Quilt without pins.
